Our Story
In 2017, in the fertile heartlands of Wangay/ Mahai community. Nestled within Mabiama Section of Magbaiamba Ndowahum Chiefdom, Bombali District, Northern Sierra Leone, the People Centred Cashew Nuts initiative (PCCNI) was born, not as a business venture, but as a bold response to a pressing need: to break the cycle of rural poverty and empower smallholder farmers through sustainable agriculture.
PCCNI exist to empower rural farmers, restore dignity to agricultural livelihoods, and cultivate prosperity through sustainable Cashew farming.
Sierra Leone’s northern region, though rich in natural resources and agricultural potential, has long struggled with the lingering effect of many things; youth employment, food insecurity, and limited access to markets. In many rural communities, farming remains the primary livelihood, yet most farmers operate at subsistence level, with little support, training, or infrastructure to scale their efforts.
PCCNI cashew initiative emerged as a beacon of hope. The crop is resilient, drought -tolerant, and well-suited to the region’s climate. It offers long-term economic returns, environmental benefits, and opportunities for value addition. Yet, until recently, its potential remained largely untapped.
Our vision is to change the narrative. PCCNI is founded by a local visionary with deep roots in community, PCCNI set out to create a model of agriculture that is inclusive, sustainable, and people driven. Our name reflects our philosophy: people come first, always.
We believe that when farmers are equipped with the right tools, knowledge, and support, they can transform their lives and their communities. PCCNI is not just an organisation; it’s a community -led revolution in how farming is practiced, valued, and rewarded.
We work hand -in-hand with local farmers – especially women and youth to build cashew plantations, provide training, and connect growers to fair markets. Our approach is holistic, inclusive, and deep rooted in the local culture and environment. Every tree we plan is a step toward economic independence, environmental restoration, and community pride.
